SCHILDHORNSTRASSE, Berlin

The Site

The Schildhornstrasse is a four-lane road with a traffic intensity of ca. 45,000 veh/day and serves as an access route to the city motorway. The street is 26 m wide. The height of the buildings on the north-easterly side is 19 m, while on the south-westerly side the buildings are 22 m high. Street orientation is 120 degree with respect to North. The pavements are approximately 4 m wide. There are parking lanes on both sides.

The Measurements

A permanent air quality monitoring station (Berliner LUftgüte MEssnetz BLUME) is located in Schildhornstrasse on the south-westerly side of the street, approximately in the middle between Paulsenstrasse and Lepsiusstrasse.

In the period December 1994 - March 1995 an additional measurement programme was carried out in the Schildhornstrasse during which pollution measurements were also carried out at the other side of the street. During the same period hourly traffic counts were also performed.

The air quality measurements covered NOx, NO2, CO, benzene, toluene and soot. The hourly measurements of benzene and toluene were however first initiated in July 1995.

Urban background measurements are available from a monitoring site located about 1.5 km from Schildhornstrasse. The urban background data covered NOx, NO2 and CO. Ozone data were not available from a site nearby Schildhornstrasse but instead measurements from three suburban stations were used. Meteorological data were registered by a nearby meteorological measuring station 10 m above the rooftop level of surrounding buildings. List of the locations from which the data are collected for this study is shown in Table 1.
