The Effects of Genetically Modified Plants on Soil Fauna

SOFAR has for a number of years investigated the potential side-effects of genetically modified plants on soil quality latest through the EU project ECOGEN.

The ECOGEN project compares two farming systems, a GM plant system and a conventional system, at three sites from Northern Europe to Southern Europe. The sites provide an evaluation of the effects of GM plants on soil ecological processes along a transect of climatic conditions from cool temperate to dry Mediterranean field sites. There will be a tiered approach building up from single-species tests, through community tests to the field trials.
