Monitoring of Nature and the Environment

On this page we have collected information about the manner in which monitoring of the environment and nature is organized, primarily for use by the Counties and the Municipalities. Note that NERI’s monitoring results are to be found under the headings Air, Water, etc., although mainly in Danish.

The nature and environment monitoring activities aim to ensure that we always have up-to-date knowledge of the state of the environment and of whether the trend is moving in the right direction. Among other things the monitoring results are thus used to assess the effects of various plans intended to improve the state of the environment. We also utilize the monitoring results in NERI’s research.

NERI coordinates the overall monitoring of nature and the environment in Denmark. We are responsible for monitoring of the air, open marine waters and a number of animal and plant species, while the county authorities are responsible for environmental monitoring of the groundwater, lakes, watercourses, fjords, coastal waters and terrestrial habitats.

NERI notifies the monitoring data to international organizations and conventions, including the European Environment Agency.
