Emission inventories

The work involves completion of the official, annual Danish inventories of emissions to the atmosphere. The inventories are reported to the EU and international conventions such as the UNECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The two international conventions deal with regional as well as global air pollution problems. The greenhouse gas emissions are also reported to the EU who, like the individual nations, is party to the Climate Convention.

Besides preparation of the emission inventories, themselves, a range of research and development activities is also undertaken directed at improving the quality of the inventories. Models have been developed to make projections for emissions to the atmosphere, including SO2, NOX, NMVOC and NH4, and current work focuses on the development of similar projection models for the greenhouse gases CO2, CH4 and N2O. Finally, methods have been developed for mapping the most important substances at a resolution down to 1/km X 1/km. This mapping represents a crucial input to atmospheric dispersion models. Moreover, the Kyoto protocol places new demands on national inventories of greenhouse gases, and NERI has initiated a project with the purpose of estimating the requirements for improved inventories in the light of the demands set out in the Kyoto protocol.

NERI participates in a number of national and international projects regarding emission inventories; for example, a number involving the counselling and training of staff in Eastern Europe, e.g. Latvia and Russia.

Information on the Danish emission inventories (emission developments, emission factors, status for reduction targets, etc.) can be found on NERI's Emission homepage, where links to official emission reports can also be found.
