The characteristics of the water column is determined by means of a CTD-profiler equipped with sensors. Data includes conductivity (C), temperature (T), pressure (D), oxygen as well as fluorescence which is a measure of phytoplankton biomass.
Salinity is calculated from the conductivity and temperature. The CTD cast is normally conducted as the first step when collecting data from a monitoring station. CTD-profiles are subsequently investigated to determine the location of the pycnocline and the maximum concentration of chlorophyll a.
The sampling depths for other analyses (hydrochemistry, primary production and plankton) are decided on the basis of the CTD-data.
