Department of Environmental Science, Aarhus University has participated in a project hosted by the Ministry of Climate and Energy and the Local Government Denmark organisation. Department of Environmental Science, Aarhus University has developed the methodological approaches, descriptions and equations which has formed the basis for programming of the CO2 calculator. Programming was performed by COWI. From the 1st of February 2009 the final version of the CO₂ calculator is freely available for the municipalities form the Danish Nature & Environment Portal (in danish).

The report "Drivhusgasopgørelse på kommuneniveau - Beskrivelse af beregningsmetoder” (in danish) includes a describtion of methodologies, data and algorithms behind the inventories of greenhouse gases at the municipality level.
