Tuesday, August 7 - Sweden:

Plant breeding at 'Svalöf Weibull AB' and the cathedral in Lund

From Elsinore we cross the narrow strip of sea to reach Scania, the southern part of Sweden.A half-hour bus drive takes us to Svalöf Weibull AB, where we will learn about the company's plant breeding activities. We will see the breeding procedure of one of the crops, biomass willow, during a field tour. Laboratory tests for diseases and insects and application of molecular markers in resistance breeding will also be presented. We continue to Lund, a city with more than a thousand years of history. The historical buildings tell the story of daily life in southern Sweden from the Middle Ages to the present day. We visit the cathedral, situated in the heart of the city. It was inaugurated in 1145 and is Scandinavia's foremost example of Romanesque architecture. From here the bus takes you back to Elsinore.

Royal Deer Park and Karens Blixens house

A 45 minutes drive southwards takes us to the Royal Deer Park, which was established in 1669. This unique mixture of grassland and old oaks and beeches holds a high diversity of insects and birds, in addition to a large population of deer.A two-hour guided tour by the Park-rangers will take us close to the deer, and show how the Park is managed to conserve the entire wildlife. On our way back we visit Karen Blixens house (Danish author, 1885-1962, perhaps known from the film 'Out of Africa'). The house has been kept as it was when Blixen lived there upon her stay in Africa, and gives a very interesting glimpse into Blixens' life.

Kronborg

On your own you can experience the fortress and renaissance castle Kronborg, which is situated a few km from the conference centre. Please visit Kronborgs website www.kronborgcastle.dk, to learn more about this unique and beautifully situated castle. Entrance to the castle is DKK 40. Bus schedule will be provided.

All tours will be operated in English.

During transportation participants are insured according to Danish Legislation regarding Transportation Insurance, but should otherwise be covered by their personal travel and health insurance when not on the bus.

The Conference Bureau reserves the right to adjust or change the programme as necessary.

A minimum advance reservation for 20 persons is required in order to guarantee operation. The Conference Bureau reserves the right to cancel operation in the event of insufficient advance reservations.
