This page is meant to support the activities of the European Environment Agency, especially those related to the project: "Harmonisation in the use of models for ambient air quality and pollution dispersion/transport". This project is labelled "MA3" in the work programme of the EEA.
The page is maintained by the National Environmental Research Institute, Denmark.
Both European Environment Agency and the European Topic Centre on Air Quality of the EEA now run World Wide Web services where you will also be able to retrieve relevant information. The information presented here serves merely as a supplementary service.
The European Environment
Agency is an institution founded by the European Union.
Membership of the EEA, however, is not confined to member states
of the European Union. The EEA is located in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The EEA has the task of providing the European Community and
the Member States with information on the environment. To be
more precise, it should provide them with:
The central office of the EEA is not large; however, the EEA conducts many of its projects by delegating the tasks to the so-called European topic centres. One of these is the European Topic Centre on Air Quality
In the context of dispersion modelling, the most relevant
topic centre is the one on Air Quality. This topic
centre is a consortium led by the Dutch RIVM with participation
from NILU (Norwegian Institute of Air Research), DNMI (Norwegian
Met Institute), and NOA (National Observatory of Athens). The
Topic Centre has its own World
Wide Web server
The EEA working programme lists around 60 projects which are
delegated to the various topic centres. The topic centre on Air
Quality has responsibility for the following tasks
The work concerning MA3 includes work on toolkits for model evaluation in cooperation with the "Initiative within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes". It also comprises the establishment of a Catalogue of Dispersion models on the WWW.
Within the framework of the MA3 project, a WWW-based catalogue of atmospheric dispersion models has been compiled by the European Topic Centre of Air Quality. When the catalogue was first launched in spring 1997, descriptions of around 30 models were included in the system. The catalogue is expected to expand as more modellers provide information to the system. In December 1997, modellers have been invited to submit information to the system.
Gabriel Kielland, EEA, is responsible for the contact to the
topic centre. Roel van Aalst, RIVM, is project leader of the
topic centre.
The persons mentioned below are responsible for various subtasks
within MA3.
